The highest point on Earth, Everest towers at 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 feet) above sea level.
Located in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, this majestic peak has beckoned climbers from around the world since the early 20th century.
Named after Sir George Everest, the British Surveyor General of India, it's known as "Sagarmatha" in Nepali and "Chomolungma" in Tibetan.
